Grand Opening of Livingston’s Skate Park

State-of-the art skate park opens to the thrill of local skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters.
June 14, 2010 After years of planning, Livingston’s skate park is now officially open.

On June 10, with a crowd of about 150 supporters including skateboarders and parents looking on, the park celebrated its Grand Opening. Patch videographer Barry Kaufman was at the ceremony and captured the excitement of the night.

The project was completed after years of planning between Livingston’s youth and adults, along with the help of HCHY (Healthy Community Healthy Youth ) and the Township Council; the groups worked to raise money for the construction of the state-of-the-art park, which is located next to Livingston’s Municipal Center. Over the past few years, teenagers and parents sought grants for the project — the United Way of North Essex and the Livingston Community Fund both contributed generously, along with many others, including an anonymous $20,000 donation — as well as held fundraisers, taking creative measures to raise money, including selling old Livingston street signs.

Many supporters were singled out during the night, but Bob Vidal, a legendary skateboard enthusiast in town, was cited by Skate Park co-chair Robert Allen. Vidal started talking about building a skate park in Livingston back in 1975.

Alan Karpas, president of HCHY, thanked the Livingston Township Council, The United Way of North Essex, The West Essex Tribune, the YMCA, Livingston Public Works and the professional team of engineers from the town for their work on the park. He also thanked the scores of volunteers who donated time, money and dedication to the project.

LIVINGSTON, NJ – When his son took up skateboarding and would skate in Walgreens’ parking lot in Livingston because there was nowhere else to go, Robert Ehrlich knew what he had to do. So began what he called “his labor of love” co-chairing the Skate Park Committee, making sure his son and his friends would have a safe place to go.

In his speech to the crowd attending the park’s grand opening on Thursday he said Livingston is the first town not to name a skate park in memory of someone who died skating in an unsafe place; instead, it is named in honor of all of those who come to use it.

Ehrlich’s advice to all the eager skateboarders, BMX bikers, in-line skaters, and unicyclists in attendance was, “have fun, make smart choices, wear your helmets, be respectful to one another, and be respectful to the park.”

Alan Karpas, president of Healthy Community Healthy Youth (HCHY) Initiative of Livingston, expressed gratitude to the United Way of North Essex for its generous donation, the YMCA for its patience during the construction, the West Essex Tribune for promoting the cause, and Livingston’s Engineering Department.

A project that was on and off for over 30 years, the park became a reality with the help of HCHY, a proactive town council, and a dedicated skate park committee comprised of adults and teens. The town’s youth were very much a part of this project’s success. It was they who came up with the park’s slogan “Respect Gets Respect.”

Committee member Josh Cohen, a senior at Livingston High School, who became a member when he was in eighth grade, told the crowd not to worry about skill. “You will not be judged for getting out there and having fun.”

Any Livingston resident age 7 and up can skate or ride as long as you register and obtain a badge from the Livingston Senior, Youth & Leisure Services Department (LSYLS). To learn more about the skate park rules and park hours go to http://livingstonskatepark.org/skate-park-rules/.
